Family Adventure Guide: Exploring Michigan's Best Spots from Beulah to Frankfort and Beaches to Breweries

With multigenerational travel on the rise, our family set out to find the perfect destination that could entertain every age-- and we discovered it in Beulah, Michigan. This past August, we spent a week on the shores of Crystal Lake, where our crew ranged from a 7-month-old-baby to 76 year old grandparents. We quickly realized that "Multigen-ing" in Michigan isn't just possible--its delightful and inclusive for everyone.

From sun-soaked beach days to scenic hikes and evenings filled with laughter, our days were packed with adventure. At the public beach on Lake Street in Beulah, the little ones splashed in the shallow waters, teens paddleboarded across Crystal Lake, parents played frisbee, and grandparents soaked in the stunning weather. We explored historic landmarks like Point Betsie Lighthouse, hiked Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes (even with our mobility-challenged grandparents cheering from the overlook),and wandered the charming streets of Traverse City, popping into boutiques and indulging in ice cream.

Adulte sipped craft beer and enjoyed live music at various breweries, while the younger crowd would play cornhole or grab bites from local food trucks. Evenings brought us together under one roof for family dinners, friendly game room competition and sunset s'mores around the Solo Stove. A perfect way to wind down after days packed with adventure.

But one day in particular stood out, the kind of day we all still talk about. Let's dive into that unforgettable itinerary.

SUNRISE ON LAKE MICHIGAN: A FISHING TRIP TO REMEMBER

The day started early, with the guys heading out on a chartered fishing trip on Lake Michigan. While the experience of being on the water at sunrise was stunning, this charter won’t be making our list of top recommendations.

We have since found a different company out of Frankfort, Tiny Bubbles Charters, for those looking to book a memorable fishing excursion.

The real highlight? My father-in-law was in heaven, sharing this experience with all the guys in the family.

A LAZY RIVER FLOAT WITH RIVERSIDE CANOE TRIPS

After the fishing crew returned, we met at Riverside Canoe Trips in Honor, Michigan, to enjoy a peaceful river float. Whether you prefer a kayak, canoe, or tube, this trip is excellent for all ages. You can also bring your paddleboard or tube if you have one!

With a group aged 7 months to 76 years, we took our time, floating anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, soaking in the scenery and making plenty of memories. What would we do differently next time?

We could tow a few fewer tubes and pack a cooler of drinks! The ride was fun, full of laughter, and a highlight of the day.

EXPLORING SLEEPING BEAR DUNES: THE PIERCE STOCKING SCENIC DRIVE

Since we were already in the area, we decided to stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and drive the famous Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

This 7.4-mile loop offers stunning overlooks of Lake Michigan, rolling dunes, and forests. Whether in the car or hop out to explore, it’s a great way to take in the views. We stopped at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire to pick up a National Park Pass—a great deal at $25 per car for the week or year (discounts available for seniors and military).

One of the best parts of the drive? Stops #9 and #10, where the adventure seekers in our group hiked the Lake Michigan side dune while others took in the incredible views from above. It’s a hike that will challenge your legs but reward you with some of the most breathtaking scenery in Michigan.

A RELAXING EVENING AT WHITE BIRCH NEST&ICE CREAM IN FRANKFORT

After a full day of exploring, we returned to White Birch Nest, our 8-bedroom vacation rental, to unwind and enjoy a home-cooked meal. There is nothing like good food, great company, and a peaceful sunset over Crystal Lake to end a perfect day.

Of course, the evening was incomplete without heading to Frankfort to stop at The Cool Spot for ice cream! This local favorite always has a line out the door (except in the off-season), but trust us—it’s worth the wait!

FINAL THOUGHTS

This day captured the best generational fun, from fishing at sunrise to floating the river, hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes, and indulging in ice cream. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or just looking to soak in the scenery, this region offers something for everyone.
